The short profile of Karimun


The regency of Karimun has a total area of 7.984 sq.km situated on the international shipping line of Malacca Strait with close borders of two neighborhood countries of Singapore and Malaysia. Karimun is enriched with natural beauties and diversity of art and culture. Tourists are also enticed with traditional Malay performances giving welcoming feelings to all who watched them. Tourism industry will certainly excel with many new opportunities as Karimun is a part of special economic zone in Indonesia providing more incentive and facilities within in region.


Karimun annual calendar events include sailing boa race, dangkong festival, rebana and kompang ( traditional slender drum ) festival, bathing festival at the month of Shafar ( second month of the year ) and lion dance festival. Some natural beauties in the region include Pelawan Beach, Pongkar waterfalls, Pongkar Beach, Sibadang Memorial Park ( an immortal commander of Riau-Lingga Kingdom who had extraordinary heinght ), Sibadang Footprints on the stone, Batu Pasir, Spring Water, Lubuk Beach, Sawang Beach, Gading Hill, Keramat Cemetry, and agro tourism.


Karimun own another unique site of Phallus and Pudendum stone ( stone resemble men and women genital parts ). This rare stone possessed a tale where during the ruling of Riau - Lingga Kingdom. Once upon a time, a ship was anchorage at harbor in the area where the king was restive to go hunting at a forest but he then suddenly decided to turn back to his ship. Much to his surprise he caught his queen in bed with his supernatural power the kicked off both queen and commander genital parts away from the ship which turned into stones. The whole ship was even destroy and turned into a stone as well. Many of cups, pans, ship pillars and other utensils may still be discovered along the area. However, the morale of the story is to advice people for not committing any adultery which may forsaken own selves.
